ISLAY

A special position the island of Islay. The island is located far off the Scottish coast and there are now eight distilleries on it. Exemplary sound and world-famous names such as Bowmore, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bruichladdich, Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain and recently Kilchoman can expect great things. The sea has formed everything on Islay and Islay means especially peat. Miles and miles extend the peat bogs and provide the raw material, which so strongly influenced the character of the southern malts. Exceptions are the Bruichladdich and Bunnahabhain distilleries with generally less smoky malts. At Port Ellen, one no longer producing distillery, is the Port Ellen Maltings, a scale malthouse, that deliveres not only Islay distilleries with malted barley. The whiskeys of this island are all very powerful and bulky and certainly leave a lasting impression.
